Artist Biography
Gabriel Aguilar is a Cuban-American composer whose work encompasses chamber music, ballet, and musical theatre. At the heart of his music is a passion for storytelling. Whether inspired by history, personal experience, or fictional narratives, his compositions seek to explore the emotional complexity of the human experience through lyrical melodies, rich harmonic language, and dramatic structure.
Born in Cuba, Aguilar immigrated to the United States with his family in 2010. It was after arriving in America that he first discovered the piano, an experience that ultimately redirected the course of his life. What began as a childhood fascination quickly developed into a lifelong pursuit of music, leading him to study composition at New World School of the Arts in Miami.
While at New World, Aguilar received rigorous training in composition, orchestration, music theory, ear training, and piano. There, he developed the technical foundation that allowed him to transform musical intuition into a refined artistic voice. Equally influential was the philosophy that composition itself cannot be taught, but that the tools and techniques of the craft can be cultivated, empowering each composer to discover and develop an individual artistic voice. This perspective continues to shape his creative approach today.
Alongside his musical studies, Aguilar pursued a professional career in ballet. Years of performing with dancers, choreographers, and orchestras have given him a unique perspective on the relationship between music and movement. This experience informs much of his writing, particularly his sense of pacing, gesture, rhythm, and dramatic timing, allowing him to approach composition with both a musician's and a performer's understanding of storytelling.
Aguilar's catalogue includes chamber music, ballet scores, and original musicals. His work draws inspiration from a wide range of subjects, including cultural identity, historical memory, love, loss, and resilience. In musical theatre, he is particularly inspired by Alan Menken's exceptional gift for melody and Stephen Sondheim's dramatic sophistication and psychological depth. His concert music, meanwhile, draws on the emotional intensity of Dmitri Shostakovich and the lyricism and romanticism of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Regardless of genre, his goal remains the same: to write music that communicates honestly, invites emotional connection, and leaves audiences with a lasting sense of narrative.
